Avidyne has received Part 25 STC approval for its IFD540 multifunction flight management system in Cessna Citation 560 Excel and XLS models equipped with the Primus 1000 EFIS. The update builds on the list of aircraft that have already seen field approvals for the system, adding a direct LPV-capable interface to both the Primus 1000 and Legacy Proline 21 aircraft systems, without the significant cost associated with adding external adapter boxes or factory EFIS upgrades, are said in the company's press release.

"We are pleased to have completed our first in-house Part 25 Transport Category STC for the IFD series of multifunction flight management systems," said John Talmadge, Avidyne's vice president of global sales. "This STC covers the installation of IFD540s in Citation Excel and XLS aircraft and will be the basis for further STC amendments and field approvals by Avidyne and our MRO partners for the full range of Avidyne multi-function flight management systems in a wide variety of turbine aircraft . IFD installations are already approved by partner MROs on the Citation II, Citation V, Citation Bravo, Lear 31, Lear 35, Westwind and Piaggio Avanti II, EVO and Classic, with more to come.

The system will make its NBAA debut on October 21-24, 2019, with certification expected in 2020.

Spoke with Avidyne President and CEO Dan Schwinn to understand more about the philosophy behind the step forward from last year's debut of IFD in Cessna Citation 525 models. “We are a new entrant to the FMS turbine market, but the technology is very mature, very stable," Schwinn said. Although not plug-and-play, the design is made for elegant installation, in order to achieve Avidyne's goals of providing a lower cost system with lower installation compared to other FMS in its class.

Schwinn also anticipates lower operating costs, in part because the charting/data subscription includes a license to use the accompanying tablet as well. This reflects the fact that many pilots flying aircraft of this class use iPads to supplement the legacy FMS installed on the aircraft. Atlas fully integrates with applications such as ForeFlight, offering fairly seamless transfer of flight plans to the unit. Everyone's approach plates and airport diagrams appear on the map screen, with a georeferenced overlay of their own ship and flight plan. Since the subscription includes the iPad license, the system provides a true backup.

Avidyne acknowledges that many aircraft operators in this market have prepared for the ADS-B Out requirement in a compliance-only manner by upgrading aircraft transponders, adding WAAS antennas and flight-mounted GPS/WAAS receivers - but to no other benefit. "We think these types of operators are really good candidates for [Atlas] because they already [install] the WAAS antenna ... in the transponder — we have interfaces with almost all transponders — and they can put this in and the benefits are derived from SBAS the approach".

The units can be installed in pairs or in combination with the company's multi-function IFD panel displays to make sense in tighter cockpit installations. Options include an integrated 16 watt VHF nav/com providing one transmit and two receive functions, along with VOR/ILS capability - either radar or TAWS-B. Wireless connectivity comes with the device, including WiFi, Bluetooth and USB ports on the face of the device.

Pricing is set at $45,000 per unit, with option prices to come. Schwinn looks forward to NBAA receiving feedback from operators and pilots on the new Atlas.
